Cystitis

Symptoms Typical Duration
  • Common in women, but uncommon in men;
  • Pungent smelling urine;
  • Burning or stinging sensation when passing urine.
Will resolve naturally within 3 days for 50% of women, but may require antibiotic treatment.
 Self-Help Advice
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Some women find that cranberry juice can help to alleviate the symptoms and prevent a recurrence;  
  • If you are susceptible to cystitis, urinate before and wash thoroughly before and after sexual intercourse;
  • Avoid sexual intercourse during an occurrence.
Over-the-Counter Medication

If in doubt, discuss over-the-counter medication with your pharmacist.

  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen can be taken to ease discomfort;
  • Sodium Citrate or Potassium Citrate in sachets or solutions may be helpful in easing some of the symptoms. Pregnant women should ask the pharmacist for advice before taking this medication;

 

When to Contact the Surgery
  • If you are a man or have a child with suspected cystitis;
  • If you have a high temperature accompanied by shaking arms or legs;
  • If you detect blood in your urine;
  • If you are pregnant;
  • If you are diabetic;
  • If symptoms persist for more than 5 days;
  • If you experience back pain, nausea or vomiting.
